The first few years were great! It's a big place for the price although previous tenants were drug dealers so we had some former customers knocking on the door at all hours. We also had debt collectors knocking, old tenants coming to tell us about the 'spirits' in the house and the police would do a thinly veiled check periodically pretending to need directions to number 1 Bedford Street. That aside it was a great location and the street art on the outside made it quirky and fun.
In the huge storm in April 2015 we had a ceiling collapse in one room and almost every room was leaking. I'm talking water running down the wall from behind the cornice. Although we were low on the insurance repair list we still had to fight to make the agent and landlord even remember the situation we were in. In June we walked into the real estate office demanding an exit or a solution. We were given a new property manager who seemed to be their 'fix it' guy. He was very good! It became apparent that the issue was the landlord.
The company that won the repair job refused to acknowledge that there was an issue with the roof. They then proceeded to patch and paint everything without addressing the problem. The roof of the room that collapsed was an extension that had been added without flashing to join the two roofs together. Meanwhile we were paying full rent of $620 per week for a leaky shed.
The real estate was dodging my requests for a rent reduction and I had been politely asking since April when the ceiling collapsed. After speaking to the rental advisory board I sent an ultimatum that I wanted a yes or no about the rent reduction by COB the next day (this was early August) as the repair work would give us one room to live in. The response came back that the owners were unwilling to reduce the rent but would let us break the lease without penalty. The owners also own the Hub, the Cleveland St Theatre and numerous other properties. I guess they were a bit strapped for cash...
